1. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Description: A whimsical tale of young Charlie’s magical journey through a world of candy and eccentricity.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is an absolute classic and it captured my imagination from the very first page! This book was so beautifully written that I don’t see how it could not have influenced my writing as an adult in some way. I clearly remember being captivated for hours and absolutely loving the oompa-loompa songs, and this was before I had heard them performed in the movie by the same name. If you also took great pleasure in these books then I believe you had a very privileged childhood as this story was the epitome of boundless imagination. I am delighted to see that they have now released a colour version of this infamous book which is available on Amazon. [Standard Edition] BUY NOW. [Colour Edition] BUY NOW.

2. Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator

Description: The fantastical adventures of Charlie continue beyond the chocolate factory, now in outer space.

As a sequel, Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator was equally as good and engaging for me. The songs in book 2 were not quite as good as book 1, but only by a very small margin. I loved that I could continue the story of the characters I had fallen in love with, namely Charlie and the very quirky Willy Wonka. This journey had me avidly hooked and I raced through the book with great enthusiasm. The ending was slightly disappointing, but more so because it was the end of a series I very dearly loved. Again, if you read both books back to back you too may be able to appreciate the feeling I felt about ending the book, even if you felt very differently about the ending yourself. Buy Now.

3. Spot the Dog

Description: A delightful children’s book following the misadventures of a lovable, spotted puppy named Spot.

The reason Spot the Dog is on the list is because it is my earliest memory of an interactive flap book. I loved seeing what was under the flap, and fully embraced the excitement of “the reveal”. It was simple and very easy to understand and I applaud the ability to create so much excitement in very simplistic pages. Thank you to my parents and my teachers who took the time to read it to me as a kid. And most importantly to the author, Eric Hill, who brought the book to life. Available on Amazon. Buy Now.

4. The Famous Five

Description: Enid Blyton’s iconic series featuring five adventurous children solving mysteries and enjoying thrilling escapades in the countryside.

If you were anything like me then you would have been a sucker for a teenage mystery book. The Famous Five ticked that box for me. It was a safe read, so my parents were more than happy to let me engage with them, but I wish they had bought me the whole series. I had to rely on what books I could find in the local library and that meant that occasionally I had to read the books out of sequence. This did not tarnish my experience though as the stories were so well written that it kept the suspense and kept me guessing all the way through. Many a night was spent reading these books long after my parents had told me to go to bed. But what could I do? They were really THAT good. Buy Now.

5. The Secret Seven

Description: The Secret Seven is a classic children’s book series by Enid Blyton, featuring a group of seven young detectives who solve mysteries and go on adventures using their secret society and teamwork.

The Secret Seven was another wonderful series that fit the mystery genre that I thoroughly enjoyed. It had highs and lows and everything in between and I know that I am not the only one who was totally obsessed with these books. The mysteries themselves were fairly tame but still had me wracking my brain trying to figure them out. This series only led to more secret reading under my blanket, but they are stories that I will treasure for the rest of my life. Buy Now.

6. Where's Wally?

Description: “Where’s Wally?” is a popular children’s puzzle book series created by Martin Handford. The books challenge readers to find the character Wally, who is dressed in a distinctive red and white striped outfit, hidden within busy and detailed illustrations filled with various characters and objects. It’s a fun and engaging seek-and-find game that encourages visual exploration and attention to detail.

"Where’s Wally?" was definitely more of a puzzle book but it was cleverly incorporated with the story. This book definitely put my vision to the test and I wanted a gold medal every time I successfully found Wally in the extremely complex pictures. Such an iconic book and perfect for young minds that want to be kept occupied. Find Wally Now.

7. The Babysitters Club

Description: “The Baby-Sitters Club” is a popular children’s book series created by Ann M. Martin. The series follows a group of middle school girls who run a babysitting business in their hometown of Stoneybrook, dealing with the challenges and adventures of adolescence, friendship, and responsibility. The books have been adapted into various media, including a TV series and a feature film.

Last, but in no means least, there is "The Babysitters Club". Catering to my girlie side I loved the message of friendship and sisterhood that was so lovingly conveyed in these pages. I also hugely admired the entrepreneurship of the characters despite being so young. This book was inspirational to me and gave me a glimpse into the American girls life and culture. Quite simply, I loved it and would recommend it to this generation as the messages are timeless. Graphic Novels :Buy Now. Books: Buy Now.

In conclusion, the enduring magic of these seven timeless books from my childhood continues to captivate and inspire readers of all ages. They should still be read today, ensuring their place in the world of timeless literature. These stories not only entertain but also impart valuable life lessons and a sense of wonder, making them a worthy addition to any reader’s collection.
